Protecting Our Community. Preserving Our Waters. Planning for the Future.

Aging and overburdened septic systems are threatening the health of our environment and putting our lakes and our way of life at risk.
Three Lakes Water & Sanitation District is expanding its centralized sewer disposal system to stop contamination, protect public health, and meet state regulations. This critical project will benefit the entire Grand Lake region for generations to come.
Why This Project Matters
Some aging and/or overburdened residential septic systems are leaking into wells, rivers, and lakes. This creates serious public health and environmental risks for everyone in our community.
Our three lakes — Grand Lake, Shadow Mountain Lake, and Lake Granby — are especially vulnerable.
- The centralized sewer expansion will:
- Stop future contamination of our water and land
- Protect long-term environmental and community health
- Ensure compliance with Colorado public health regulations
Cost & Funding Overview
Three Lakes Water & Sanitation District is leading the effort to build out the main sewer lines and will cover the entire construction cost of this portion of the project.
- The District has secured state and federal grants, including a $1 million EPA grant, to offset the cost of the main lines, saving residents money.
- Years of careful financial management have resulted in a strong reserve fund to support this work.
- Homeowners who have not yet converted and connected to the centralized system will be responsible for the cost of that work on their property once their home becomes eligible.
Next Steps for Select Homeowners
There are approximately 700 homes remaining in the final phase of the expansion. By law, once the main lines are in place, homeowners within 400 feet will be required to connect to the centralized system.
The District understands this may be a significant investment and is actively pursuing low-interest financing options to help ease the burden.
If you're affected, you’ll be notified well in advance, and support will be available.
Together, we can protect the water, land, and future of the Three Lakes community.
